An API to control the projects would probably solve the shortcomings of the sidebar.

It would be better if there will be some sort of project api that will allow us to write plugins in order to open projects from different formats like maven project for example.

Not just the sidebar: being able to set per-project settings via an API would provide for a way to alter the behavior of a window without having to scan every view in it and try to keep those settings variables synchronized.
