Provide support for "go back to last selection"

Ionuț G. Stan 12 years ago 0

I'm an avid user of the "Expand Selection to Scope" feature, but sometimes I select too much and I'd like to go back one or two steps. "Go Back to Last Selection" would be a useful addition (I haven't seen it as far as I searched). IDEs such as Eclipse and Intellij IDEA already provide an equivalent for both of these actions.

Applying for academic posts in Southeast Asia: checklist

imeldablaze 11 years ago 0

Westhill Consulting Career & Employment based in Australia, thank the guardian for the following comments

Do your research
Collaborating with an overseas university first is a great way to get to know them if you are considering moving abroad. Paul Matsudaira started his career at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US, before accepting the position as head of biological sciences atNational University of Singapore in 2009.

While he was still at MIT, Matsudaira taught biology to students from two Singaporean universities via an online videolink. He also travelled to Singapore several times in the summer holidays to teach at study camps. He says his family really enjoyed their trips to Singapore, and this made it much easier for him to make the decision about accepting the offer of a full-time post.

Go for it wholeheartedly
Once you have made the decision to move, make sure it is a clean break. Matsudaira says the biggest mistake he saw others making was expats not really committing to the move. Warning, it can be very stressful trying to run parallel lives – particularly across different time zones. It can also lead your new employers to question your commitment to the job. He said a "go for broke" attitude is essential to succeed.

Don't be put off by the paperwork
Job interviews often take place in London. The employing university liaises with the immigration department and it usually takes less than four weeks for a work permit to be issued. Pay In general HK/south-east Asian universities pay better than European institutions and about the same as US universities, but tax is much lower.

Check for allowances
Academics with children should also check on the availability and costs of places at international schools and whether the employer provides any education allowance.

Look into accommodation
Accommodation is very expensive in many of south-east Asia's densely populated cities so colleges often provide it as part of the package. But if living cheek-by-jowl with your colleagues does not appeal see if the university will contribute towards an alternative. Look out for scams in working with accommodation agencies. There are few places where you can place a complaint.

It will be a positive career move
UK universities are still keen to attract overseas students, so academics with experience of working overseas and with good contacts abroad are likely to be in demand.

It's a great place to be
Tom Vinaimont teaches finance at City University in Hong Kong. He says: "Both HK, Bangkok, Jakarta and Singapore are seen as transitory destinations; places to get your career on track (research funding is pretty generous here) and then to move on from. But many people stay. I was planning to stay for three years. Now I've been here for 10, and I've just bought a house."

Sidebar with 'open files' hidden is visually corrupted when first opened

Martin Aspeli 13 years ago updated by Braxton Beyer 12 years ago 1
When opening a folder with subl on the command line in OS X after hiding open files from the sidebar, the sidebar is corrupted visually. It fixes itself when you move your mouse over it. See screenshot below.

context selector doesn't work on last line

Alexander Schepanovskiy 12 years ago 0

I am using this key binding:

{ "keys": ["enter"], "command": "comments_aware_enter", "context": [
{ "key": "selector", "operator": "equal", "operand": "comment.line" },
{ "key": "auto_complete_visible", "operator": "equal", "operand": false }
] },

but unfortunately

{ "key": "selector", "operator": "equal", "operand": "comment.line" },

doesn't work when the cursor is on the last line in a file.

select to matching brace/element

Jason Day 12 years ago 0

Komodo Edit has a great feature, where when you are on a line (beginning, in , or end of tag/brace) and you can right click and select to the matching brace. So in this manner, it's fantastic for selecting the entire contents of a div instead of trying to select based on the matching brace indicator.

Problem closing window in full screen mode

Henrik Strøm 11 years ago 0
Sublime Text 2.0.2 on OS X 10.9.1.

When Sublime Text is in full screen mode, if you choose File, Close Window, the window will close but you can't get back to Sublime Text.

- clicking in the dock does not choose the application
- Command Tab to Sublime Text does not choose the application

You have to force quit and the open again.

Git controls, perhaps?

Bryant Glisson 12 years ago updated by Ethan Lemke 9 years ago 3

Awesome editor!  This was suggested to me by a coworker and has quickly become my favorite IDE.  Very intuitive and lightweight.  Only thing that's missing that would be nice to have is git controls.  I formerly used Aptana Studio, which does have these, and it was very nice to be able to navigate git via their interface, rather than having to type everything out.  Would be a really nice addition.

Contextual menus should appear on mouse down

Isaac Reuben 14 years ago updated 14 years ago 2
Currently they don't appear (on OSX at least) until you right-click and then *release* your mouse button, which isn't usually how contextual menus work.

I tried to find some features (like removing a folder form the project) that are actually implemented, but that I didn't think were because the menu didn't appear while holding down mouse button.

Underlined regions do not display for non-word characters

Aparajita 11 years ago 0
In ST3, if a region is marked with any of the underline styles, the underline does not display for non-word characters (such as white space). By contrast, outlines always display.

It would be nice if there were at least a setting (or a draw flag for use with add_regions) that would allow underines to draw under all characters.

Top Tips for Business Negotiations in SE Asia

bran ahearn 11 years ago 0
Tip 1: Each SE Asian country is different

South East Asia is a mixture of nations and cultures which have combined under regional block called ASEAN to assist with the development of the region.

These nations are Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Lao and Burma.

Each Nation has unique resources and are at various stages of development.

It is critical to understand each of these nations are different – sometime very different and should be considered individually when developing an export strategy.

Tip 2: Be Prepared to Negotiate

Negotiating is an in built part of Asian culture, and is unavoidable. Be prepared, and seek advice if unsure on how to develop your pricing strategy or do not have knowledge of these many variables.

Negotiating in ASEAN has become an art, and many Australian executives will when asked for their best price, immediately give the bottom price without realising this is only the beginning of the negotiating process and are then left with a lose/lose situation.

Tip 3: Develop a structured pricing structure

When developing export and pricing strategies a company should have a well structured pricing strategy.

Put simply, price list "A" which is what you would really like to achieve, price list "B" what you would consider your domestic wholesale price and therefore acceptable, and pricelist "C" which is your final offer.

Bear in mind that many ASEAN exporters, will expect you to consider quantity discounts, longer than normal payment terms, open account, and 90% of the time exclusivity.

You have to decide whether you are to bank roll your exports at low margins, the costs of using banking instruments (L/C’s), and if prices get to low whether this is a market suitable for you.

Finally one must consider shipping terms, FOB, C&F, ex-works etc., and the impact these pricing terms have on your prices.
One point to your advantage is the term exclusivity, this give you the right to demand minimum orders, minimum yearly sales and contribution to marketing and promotion costs in getting your product to market.

vim mode - n x - remove characters

Jon Hogue 11 years ago 0

In vim, when I'm in the middle of the line and do something like:

1000x

It deletes all the characters from my current position until the end of the line, then stops deleting characters.

In sublime text, when you do this, it acts much differently. It deletes until the end of the line and keeps on going.

Detect closing brace (like parenthesis).

Socapex 2K 12 years ago 0

It would be an immense plus if Sublime Text could detect if you are closing a brace, skip adding the brace and position your cursor in the next text block. For example:

{

something(); } <-- The editor should detect that this brace is already closed.

}

<-- The editor should move your cursor here instead of adding a new brace.

HTML tag completion bizarrely gives me </function>

Jesse Ruderman 11 years ago 0
If I type </ at the bottom of the following document, it tries to close an imaginary "function" element rather than the "html" element.

  • Sublime Text 3 (build 3047) on Mac OS X 10.9.1

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<script>
function f() { }
</script>

Add an API call for determining if tabs are visible

Christopher Roach 12 years ago 0

I have a new plugin I created for automatically showing/hiding tabs based on the number of views in a window/group. There is a problem with it though, and that's that the user must first initialize a window to get it to work correctly, and by that I mean, they must set a new empty window to hide tabs before opening or closing any files. This is necessary because there is no API call to find out if tabs are currently visible.
