It's possible the documentation is just wrong, but I do think that being able to browse symbols in a project like this would be very useful.

I would also like this. I use build systems to define different targets (release/debug/etc), and some way to fast switch these would be great.
I would prefer a popup window like the 'project switcher', maybe with Ctrl+Alt+B
