ctrl+tab and ctrl+shift+tab bug

Commands do not seem to always move in the correct direction through tabs. Open 3 tabs up and go back and forth a bunch, at some point mine always does something unexpected

Ctrl+tab defaults to cycling through tabs in MRU order, rather than in the order they're displayed (ctrl+tab is bound by default to next_view_in_stack). Have you tried e.g. super+shift+] in OS X? (bound to next_view by default).
