Actually turns out you can just add this to your preferences:

"always_show_minimap_viewport": true

No big deal then!

I agree very strongly with this. The minimap is a fantastic feature and I love it, but I'd really like to be able to see my current position at a glance without having to mouse over it like I could before. At least add it back in as a selectable option?
